Coming into this game, Virginia Tech was 1-3 and had yet to play a conference game, and Pittsburgh was 1-3 as well but 0-1 in the ACC. Both teams came into this game looking for a much needed ACC win, but Virginia Tech were the ones who ended up winning. The Hokies defeated the Panthers 38-21. Let’s take a closer look at this game, with our very own Correspondent Matthew Burdette Jr. on site.
To begin the game, Virginia Tech kicked off to Pitt. Pitt’s first drive ended in a 3 and out, and they were forced to punt. On the Hokies first drive they scored a touchdown as Kyron Drones found Da’Quan Felton for a 54 yard touchdown. On the very next play of the game, Phil Jurkovec found Bub Means for a 75 yard touchdown to make the score 7-7. The next four possessions of the game ended in punts. The first quarter came to a close as Virginia Tech was driving.
The second quarter started as Kyron Drones rushed for a 2 yard touchdown to give Virginia Tech a 14-7 lead. When the Panthers got the ball back, they went three and out and punted back to the Hokies. Then, the Hokies Punted as well. On Pitt’s next drive, they were putting together a nice drive, but were unable to score points as they missed a long field goal. After the missed field goal Virginia Tech was able to capitalize as Kyron Drones threw a 12 yard touchdown pass to Bhayshui Tuten. The first half came to end with Pitt possessing the ball, and Virginia Tech was winning 21-7.
To open up the second half, Virginia Tech received the ball but punted shortly after. On Pitt’s first drive of the second half, Phil Jurkovec was sacked and he fumbled. Shortly after the fumble, Kyron Drones rushed for a 10 yard touchdown to put the Hokies up 28-7. On the next play, Phil Jurkovec found C’Bo Flemister for a 61 yard touchdown. Then on Virginia Tech’s next possession, Virginia Tech fumbled and Braylan Lovelace returned it for a touchdown to make it 28-21. When Virginia Tech got the ball back, they punted it to Pitt. Pitt punted it right back to Virginia Tech when they got the ball back. On the next drive, Kyron Drones found Jaylin Lane for a 53 yard touchdown. The Hokies were now up 35-21. When Pitt got the ball again, they punted. The third quarter ended with the Hokies getting the ball back.
To start the fourth quarter, Virginia Tech drove for 14 plays and 77 yards and finished their drive off with a John Love 32 yard field goal. On Pitt’s final possession of the game, they were driving but then they turned the ball over on fourth down. Virginia Tech then ran out the clock until the end of the game. Virginia Tech defeated Pittsburgh 38-21.
Virginia Tech played very well to earn their first conference win of the season and their second win total. Quarterback Kyron Drones had an amazing game, totalling 5 touchdowns. Running Back Bhayshui Tuten played very well too, as he had over 100 yards rushing and a receiving touchdown. With the Hokies earning a crucial ACC victory, maybe they can reciprocate this success against more conference opponents.
Pittsburgh might have lost, but they did not play terribly. They are 0-2 in the ACC right now and 1-4 overall, but they still have seven games left. Hopefully they can make a push to make a bowl game.
