Dior Johnson's basketball journey has been anything but ordinary, but Monday night he gave the college basketball world a reminder of just how talented he is.

In UCF's season opener against Florida Gulf Coast, Johnson exploded for 41 points, on just 15 shots leading the Knights to a thrilling 96-95 overtime victory. He shot an incredible 13-of-15 from the field, including a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range.

But this performance means much more than just a big night in the box score.

Once one of the most highly regarded recruits in the country, Johnson originally was committed to staying home and attending Syracuse, and then committed to play at Oregon and eventually enrolled at Pitt. He faced a difficult road early in his college career. After redshirting at Pittsburgh, he found his way through junior college basketball before arriving at UCF, where he played a limited role during his first season.

Johnson continued working. His move to Tarleton State changed everything. He averaged 24 points per game, earned WAC Sixth Man of the Year honors and established himself as one of the most dangerous scorers in college basketball.

Injuries forced him to miss 12 games last season, but he still found a way to finish strong, recording four straight 20-point performances.

Now back at UCF, Johnson is showing what happens when talent, experience and perseverance come together. His 41-point performance set a UCF Division I record for most points in a season opener and marked the fourth-highest single-game scoring total in program history.

As someone who covered Johnson since he was the highly touted High School phenom, and covered games at Tarleton State last year it is great to see a player who has experienced so many ups and downs remind everyone of his game, Monday night felt like another important chapter in a comeback story for Johnson as he looks to lead the Knights this season.
