March Madness Preview

Every year in March, the NCAA picks 68 teams to make the NCAA tournament. 8 teams compete for the last four spots, and then the 64 teams remaining compete in a single elimination tournament to decide the NCAA champion. The final four this year is being held in Houston. The tournament is full of great stories, upsets, and heartbreaks and this is why it is called March Madness. Let’s take a look at each part of the bracket.


The South Region:

  1. Alabama is the SEC Champion and the 1 seed of the South Region and the 1 seed overall.
  2. Arizona won the PAC-12 tournament and they are the 2 seed.
  3. Baylor is the 3 seed.
  4. Virginia is the 4 seed.
  5. San Diego State is the Mountain West Champion and the 5.
  6. Creighton is the 6 seed.
  7. Missouri comes in as the 7 seed.
  8. Maryland comes in as the 8 seed.
  9. West Virginia is the 9 seed.
  10. Utah State is the 10 seed.
  11. NC State is the 11 seed.
  12. College of Charleston is the CAA Champion and the 12 seed.
  13. Furman is the Southern Conference Champion and the 13 seed.
  14. UC Santa Barbara is the Big West Champion and the 14 seed.
  15. Princeton is the Ivy League Champion and the 15 seed.
  16. The 16 seed will either be Texas A&M-CC or SE Missouri State.

South Matchups:

  1. Alabama vs. winner of Texas A&M-CC and SE Missouri State
  2. Arizona vs Princenton
  3. Baylor vs. UC Santa Barbara
  4. Virginia vs. Furman
  5. San Diego State vs. College of Charleston
  6. Creighton vs NC. State
  7. Missouri vs. Utah State
  8. Maryland vs. West Virginia

The East Region:

  1. Purdue won the Big-10 Championship and they are the 1 seed of the East region.
  2. Marquette won the Big East Championship and they are the 2 seed.
  3. Kansas State is the 3 seed.
  4. Tennessee is the 4 seed.
  5. Duke won the ACC Championship and they are the 5 seed.
  6. Kentucky is the 6 seed.
  7. Michigan State is the 7 seed.
  8. Memphis won the AAC Championship and they are the 8 seed.
  9. FAU won the Conference USA Championship and they are the 9 seed.
  10. USC is the 10 seed.
  11. Providence is the 11 seed.
  12. Oral Roberts won the Summit League Championship and they are the 12 seed.
  13. Louisiana won the Sun Belt Championship and they are the 13 seed.
  14. Montana State won the Big Sky Championship and they are the 14 seed.
  15. Vermont won the American East Championship and they are the 15 seed.
  16. The winner of the game between Texas Southern and Fairleigh Dickinson will be the 16 seed.

East Matchups:

  1. Purdue vs. Texas Southern or Fairleigh Dickinson
  2. Marquette vs. Vermont
  3. Kansas State vs. Montana State
  4. Tennessee vs. Louisiana
  5. Duke vs. Oral Roberts
  6. Kentucky vs. Providence
  7. Michigan State vs. USC
  8. Memphis vs. FAU

The Midwest Region:

  1. Houston is the 1 seed of the Midwest region.
  2. Texas won the Big-12 Championship and they are the 2 seed.
  3. Xavier is the 3 seed.
  4. Indiana is the 4 seed.
  5. Miami is the 5 seed.
  6. Iowa State is the 6 seed.
  7. Texas A&M is the 7 seed.
  8. Iowa is the 8 seed.
  9. Auburn is the 9 seed.
  10. Penn State is the 10 seed.
  11. The winner of Mississippi State vs Pittsburgh will be the 11 seed.
  12. Drake won the Missouri Valley Championship and they are the 12 seed.
  13. Kent State won the Mid-American Championship and they are the 13 seed.
  14. Kennesaw State won the ASUN Championship and they are the 14 seed.
  15. Colgate won the Patriot League Championship and they are the 15 seed.
  16. Northern Kentucky won the Horizon League Championship and they are the 16 seed.

Midwest Matchups:

  1. Houston vs. Northern Kentucky
  2. Texas vs. Colgate
  3. Xavier vs. Kennesaw State
  4. Indiana vs. Kent State
  5. Miami vs. Drake
  6. Iowa State vs. Mississippi State or Pittsburgh
  7. Texas A&M vs. Penn State
  8. Iowa vs. Auburn

The West Region:

  1. Kansas is the 1 seed of the West region.
  2. UCLA is the 2 seed.
  3. Gonzaga won the West Coast Championship and is the 3 seed.
  4. Uconn is the 4 seed.
  5. Saint Mary’s is the 5 seed.
  6. TCU is the 6 seed.
  7. Northwestern is the 7 seed. 
  8. Arkansas is the 8 seed.
  9. Illinois is the 9 seed.
  10. Boise State is the 10 seed.
  11. The winner of Arizona State vs Nevada will be the 11 seed.
  12. VCU won the Atlantic 10 Championship and they are the 12 seed.
  13. Iona won the MAAC Championship and they are the 13 seed.
  14. Grand Canyon won the WAC Championship and they are the 14 seed.
  15. UNC Asheville won the Big South Championship and they are 15 seed.
  16.  Howard won the MEAC Championship and they are the 16 seed.

West Matchups:

  1. Kansas vs. Howard
  2. UCLA vs. UNC Asheville 
  3. Gonzaga vs. Grand Canyon
  4. Uconn vs. Iona
  5. Saint Mary’s vs. VCU
  6. TCU vs. Arizona State or Nevada
  7. Northwestern vs. Boise State
