The 2025 HBCU football season will begin with a spotlight matchup as North Carolina Central University and Southern University collide in the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge. The game is set for Saturday, August 23, with a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on ABC, giving fans nationwide a chance to tune in to one of the biggest showcases in Black college football.
Celebrating Tradition and Talent
Now a fixture in the college football calendar, the MEAC/SWAC Challenge pairs two of the most storied conferences in HBCU athletics. Representing the MEAC, NCCU enters the season after finishing second in the conference last year, while SWAC West champion Southern looks to build on its 2024 success. Beyond the play on the field, the night will be filled with the pageantry HBCU football is known for, with NCCU’s Marching Sound Machine and Southern’s iconic Human Jukebox both performing at halftime.
Riding the Wave of Momentum
Last year’s edition of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge set a new benchmark for the event, drawing a record 1.3 million viewers. This season, organizers expect even higher engagement, fueled by the rising national profile of HBCU sports. With the game taking place at Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta — a city rich in HBCU culture — the stands are expected to be packed with alumni, students, and fans from across the country.
More Than Just a Game
The ABC broadcast offers an invaluable platform for both programs, giving players and coaches national visibility while shining a light on the academic and athletic achievements of HBCUs. The exposure also plays a role in recruiting, community engagement, and expanding the conversation about the importance of supporting these historic institutions.
Looking Ahead
As the MEAC/SWAC Challenge grows in stature, it continues to embody the pride, heritage, and competitive spirit of HBCU football. With two championship-caliber teams, a national TV audience, and the vibrant backdrop of Atlanta, the 2025 edition is set to be a fitting opening chapter for what promises to be an exciting season in HBCU athletics.
