Akron Rallies For Home Victory

The Akron Zips hosted The Colgate Raiders on Saturday for their home opener, both teams came into the game 0-2. Akron started out slow but came out on top, finishing the game with 416 all purpose offensive yards, 4 touchdowns and 1 field goal which brought the score to 31-20. 


The 1st quarter was dominated by Colgate, The Raiders scored 17 points, two touchdowns and a field goal. Treyvhon Saunders caught a 33 yard pass from Micheal Brescia for the first points of the game, Brescia found his way into the endzone from 3 yards out to put Colgate up on the board again and finally Luke Vogeler hit a 51 yard field goal to take the lead to 17-0 over the Zips. After a few disappointing offensive drives, Quarterback Ben Finley found #22 Charles Kellom to answer back and to finish off the 1st quarter 17-7. 


The Zips were fired up after the first quarter and immediately got to work, Tight End Jake Newell caught a touchdown pass from 2 yards out. Bobby Golden was next up on Finley’s hit list, a 56 yard reception had Golden written all over it. Finley found his 4th and final touchdown pass in WR Adrian Norton, that pass brought the score to 28-17 to finish off the half.


The 3rd and 4th quarter were relatively quiet. Luke Vogeler of Colgate and Garrison Smith of Akron both added 3 points to the scoreboard, Vogeler with a 45 yarder and Smith with a 32 yard field goal. Ben Finley was a standout player, he finished the game with 358 yards and 4 touchdowns. Wide Receiver Adrian Norton and Bobby Golden both were targeted 5 times, Norton had 125 receiving yards and Golden had 119. The final score was 31-20.
