College Football Week 2 Recap

Author: Jack Culberson

Week 2 of the College Football season had some electrifying games and a lot of upsets. Let’s take a closer look into some of the best games of the Week.

#1 Alabama vs. Texas

These two teams have not faced each other since the 2010 BCS National Championship game where Alabama defeated Texas 37-21 to finish their perfect season. This week 2 matchup took place in Austin, Texas and was the home for college game day this week. Alabama were the favorites in this game, but unranked Texas was looking for an upset. However, just like in the 2010 National Championship game, Texas’s starting quarterback (Quinn Ewers) was injured. Backup Hudson Card played well for Texas but a hurt ankle set him and the offense back, and ultimately the former Heisman winner and the Crimson Tide were too much for the Longhorns. Alabama kicked the game winning field goal with 10 seconds left in the game to make the score 20-19 and defeated Texas. Alabama remained undefeated and Texas showed they can be competitive in big games.

Appalachian State vs. #6 Texas A&M

The number 6 team in the nation hosted the Mountaineers at their home, Kyle Field. The Aggies were favorites in this game, but they did not play like it. The Aggies offense struggled and in the end their defense was not able to stop the dynamic Mountaineer offense. Texas A&M lost at home 14-17.

Marshall vs. #8 Notre Dame

Marcus Freeman’s Fighting Irish were searching for their first win under the new head coach. This week they were hosting Thundering Herd at home, and things could have not gone more unexpected than they did this game. The Fighting Irish did not look like the eighth best team in the nation, and they ended up losing 21-26. The Irish are now unranked, and Marcus Freeman remains winless.

#24 Tennessee vs. #17 Pittsburgh

The second ever Johnny Major’s Classic was held at Pittsburgh this year. Last year Pittsburgh defeated Tennessee in Knoxville with a score of 41-34. The Volunteers seeked revenge on the road this year and they got just that. They defeated Pitt 34-27 in overtime.

#20 Kentucky vs. #12 Florida

The Gators were coming off a great win over Utah, and they looked to continue their success against another ranked team in Kentucky. However, Kentucky was looking to beat the Gators for the second straight year. Florida’s quarterback Anthony Richardson was not able to replicate the success he found against Utah, and ultimately it led to Florida’s loss. Kentucky won in Gainesville 26-16.

Georgia Southern vs. Nebraska

Scott Frost’s Cornhuskers were looking to have a winning record for the first time this season, but the Eagles were looking to stun them in Lincoln. The Eagles did just this as they won a shootout in Lincoln and beat Nebraska 45-42. This loss was Scott Frost’s last chance as he was fired afterwards.

#25 Houston vs. Texas Tech

The Red Raiders were looking to defend their home and defeat the #25 Cougars. This game was a thriller and went into double overtime. The game ended on a 9 yard touchdown run by Red Raiders quarterback Donovan Smith, and after the touchdown the fans stormed the field. Texas Tech defeated Houston 33-30.

#9 Baylor vs. #21 BYU

The Cougars were hosting the reigning Big 12 Champions this week. This was a great game, but in the end the Cougars bested the Bears 26-20 in overtime. This game could show that BYU is ready to join the Big 12 and they will compete straight away, when they do join the conference in 2023
