Last night, the Colorado Buffaloes traveled down to the Flats to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and were able to pull out a win in the dying seconds of the game! This was a very low-scoring game, with the Buffaloes coming away with a 14-13 win. You could tell both teams were just trying to settle in with their young quarterbacks and new systems.
There was only one turnover in this game, but the ball was slipping and sliding all night. The ball was on the ground multiple times last night. Colorado opened the scoring in the second half, where running back Micah Welch punched it in from five yards out to cap off a 35-yard scoring drive. But the Yellow Jackets quickly responded with a 100-yard kick return by Rahkeem Smith! The Yellow Jackets took a 10-7 lead going into halftime with a 22-yard field goal from kicker Aidan Birr.
The game went stagnant after that, with neither team able to find the end zone or put any more points on the board until there was just one minute and 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Georgia Tech settled for another field goal to take a 13-7 lead with just over 90 seconds remaining.
True sophomore quarterback Julian Lewis then led the Buffaloes on a charge down the field to try and win the game. He was able to find Charlie Williams for a 20-yard touchdown to take a 14-13 lead with 37 seconds left in the game.
It was time for the Yellow Jackets to try and get themselves into field goal range. On their first play of offense, Alberto Mendoza was able to find receiver Dalen Penson for a 42-yard pass and catch, putting their offense at Colorado's 33-yard line. The Yellow Jackets seemed content with this field position, playing pretty conservatively over the next few plays with a three-yard pass and a three-yard run.
It was time to try a 45-yard field goal with three seconds left. Snap is good, hold is good, and IT'S BLOCKED. Tennessee transfer Boo Carter was able to block the field goal to secure the Buffaloes' first win of the season!
