Virginia Tech pulled off a wild, double OT win Friday night, beating Cal 42-34 at Lane Stadium. Quarterback Kyron Drones was the difference, scoring five touchdowns and making clutch plays when it mattered most.

Tech started strong, going up 10-0 early. Cal answered with 20 straight points before halftime, led by running back Kendrick Raphael, who scored twice. The Bears went into half-time up 20-10.

The Hokies fought back in the second half. Drones had a late touchdown in the fourth to give Tech a 27-20 lead, but Cal responded with Raphael’s third score to tie it. Both teams had a chance to win it in regulation, but missed field goals from both teams sent the game to overtime.

After trading touchdowns in the first OT, Drones hit Takye Heath for a short score and ran in the two-point conversion. The Hokies’ defense held firm, forcing four straight incompletions to end it.

Drones finished with 137 rushing yards and 119 passing. Marcellous Hawkins added 167 on the ground. Cal’s freshman QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele threw for 285 yards, and linebacker Cade Uluave had 19 tackles.
The Hokies host Louisville next. Cal heads home to face Virginia.
