SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State picked up its first win of the 2026 season Saturday, defeating North Texas 49-35 at UFCU Stadium.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 21-7 lead before North Texas battled back to tie the game 28-28 at halftime. Texas State took control in the second half, shutting out the Mean Green in the third quarter and pulling away late.
Davian Jackson Continues His Breakout
Redshirt freshman Davian Jackson was one of the biggest stories of the afternoon, finishing with 77 rushing yards on 10 carries and three rushing touchdowns, while also adding a receiving touchdown. Jackson now has six touchdowns on the season, continuing an impressive start to his freshman campaign.
Bobcats Dominate on the Ground
Texas State’s rushing attack was a major difference-maker. The Bobcats finished with 337 rushing yards, compared to just 82 for North Texas. Torrance Burgess Jr. led the way with 214 yards on 25 carries, while Jackson added four total touchdowns.
North Texas Keeps Fighting
North Texas continued to battle behind quarterback Tayven Jackson, who threw for a career-high 483 yards and three touchdowns. However, the Mean Green struggled to slow Texas State’s rushing attack, which ultimately proved to be the difference.
A Much-Needed Win
The victory moves Texas State to 1-2 on the season, while North Texas also falls to 1-2. After a high-scoring battle, the Bobcats leave San Marcos with their first win of the year, and a freshman running back quickly becomes a player to keep an eye on.
