As the season turns the corner into November, true freshmen around college football are no longer simply adjusting to the speed of the game they’re changing it. Week 9 offered another reminder that the next generation of stars isn’t waiting their turn. From quarterbacks leading comeback wins to young skill players carving up defenses, first-year players played major roles in shaping Saturday’s outcomes across the country.

No performance stood taller than BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier’s. The true freshman guided the No. 10 Cougars to a 41–27 comeback win over Iowa State, keeping BYU’s perfect season alive. Calm and composed, Bachmeier threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing score, showing the kind of pocket presence that belied his age. His timing and decision-making stood out on several key drives, especially late in the first half when he manipulated the defense with his eyes and delivered a strike to the back of the end zone. BYU leaned on him to rally from an early deficit, and he delivered another sign that the Cougars’ offense is in good hands moving forward.

At Pittsburgh, another freshman quarterback is making waves. Mason Heintschel continued his impressive run since taking over as the starter, throwing for 423 yards and three touchdowns in the Panthers’ 53–34 win over NC State. Heintschel’s control of the offense and confidence in the pocket have elevated Pitt’s attack, turning them into one of the ACC’s most efficient units in recent weeks. His quick processing and ability to stretch defenses vertically helped Pittsburgh move to 4–0 with him under center.

Out west, Oregon leaned on true freshman running back Jordon Davison to grind out a 21–7 win over Wisconsin in heavy rain at Autzen Stadium. With star quarterback Dante Moore leaving the game in the third quarter, Davison became the steadying force, rushing for 102 yards and two touchdowns. His blend of strength and patience helped the Ducks control the clock and wear down Wisconsin’s defense. Each carry reflected the physical maturity of a player who’s already running like a veteran, giving Oregon a dependable option for the stretch run.

In Norman, Ole Miss wide receiver Winston Watkins delivered the breakout Rebels fans had been waiting for. The speedy freshman made four catches for 111 yards in a crucial 34–26 win over No. 13 Oklahoma, providing explosive plays when his team needed them most. His sharp route-running and ability to separate downfield opened up the offense in the second half, highlighted by a 43-yard reception that set up a key score. Watkins is quickly becoming another dangerous weapon in Lane Kiffin’s high-powered system.

Even in defeat, Oklahoma found a silver lining in the play of true freshman cornerback Courtland Guillory. Matched up against one of the nation’s most dynamic receiving corps, Guillory allowed just two catches for seven yards on eight targets while breaking up two passes. His discipline and instincts stood out against an experienced Ole Miss offense, suggesting he’s already one of the Sooners’ most reliable defenders.

As November arrives, these freshmen are proving that the future of college football is already here. Whether it’s Bachmeier’s poise, Davison’s physicality, or Watkins’ game-breaking speed, Week 9 was another showcase of young talent not just finding its footing but leading the way.
