Georgia Tech hits the road for its Atlantic Coast Conference opener Saturday night, traveling across the country to face Stanford in a late kickoff that carries early-season weight for both programs.
The Yellow Jackets take on the Cardinal at 10:30 p.m. ET (7:30 p.m. PT) at Stanford Stadium. Georgia Tech enters as a slight favorite (around 3.5 to 4.5 points in early lines).
Why This One Matters
For Brent Key’s group, this is more than just the start of ACC play. A win would give the Yellow Jackets their first conference victory on the year and put them at 2-2 overall heading into a bye week. That rest comes at a good time: Tech returns home Oct. 10 to face defending ACC champion Duke, which sits at 3-0 and 1-0 in league play.
Getting on the right side of the ledger early against a Stanford team already lost twice in the ACC would provide breathing room and confidence before that tougher test. A loss, by contrast, would drop Tech to 0-1 in conference play and leave the Jackets playing catch-up in a very competitive ACC race while trying to prepare for a tough Blue Devils team.
Stanford, meanwhile, is searching for its first conference win under new head coach Tavita Pritchard. The Cardinal have been outscored badly in their two ACC games with a score differential of -67 and desperately need a home victory to avoid falling further behind the pack.
How They Got Here
Georgia Tech opened with a narrow loss to Colorado (14-13) and losing to No. 18 Tennessee (45-24) before responding with a 44-11 thrashing over Mercer last Saturday. Transfer quarterback Alberto Mendoza has thrown for 707 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Running back Justice Haynes leads the ground game with 286 yards and three scores. Stanford beat Hawaii in the opener before suffering heavy defeats to Miami and Duke. The series history favors Tech: the Yellow Jackets lead 2-0, with both wins coming in bowl games (1991 Aloha Bowl and 2001 Seattle Bowl). This is the first regular-season meeting and Georgia Tech’s first trip to Stanford Stadium. It is also Tech’s first ACC game against one of the conference’s newest California additions.
Key Storylines
The cross-country travel and late kickoff add variables. Georgia Tech is also dealing with a lengthy injury report that includes several starters ruled out or questionable, particularly on the offensive line and defense. How the Jackets manage depth and adjust will be critical on the road.
Offensively, Tech will look to build on the Mercer performance and exploit a Stanford defense that has struggles at times. Beating Stanford would not just be a solid early-season result. It would stabilize the conference picture, create positive momentum into the bye, and put the Yellow Jackets in a stronger position for the challenging task in taking down Duke. Stanford will try to protect the football and find rhythm at home after two tough conference losses.
A victory Saturday would give Georgia Tech a much-needed early conference win and a clean slate heading into the bye and the home date with Duke. For a team still searching for consistency after an uneven start, that would be a meaningful step in ACC play.
