In one of the biggest surprises of the season, Kennesaw State shocked Liberty with a 27-24 upset on Wednesday, handing the Flames their first loss and putting a serious dent in their College Football Playoff hopes. Liberty came into the game undefeated at 5-0 and had gained momentum as a potential Group of 5 team to watch in the expanded CFP format. However, the winless Owls, who were heavy 27-point underdogs, had other ideas, securing their first-ever win as an FBS team and leaving Liberty to rethink their postseason ambitions.
Liberty wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, jumping out to an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. But Kennesaw State immediately responded, tying the game at 7-7 after a methodical drive. The Flames’ offense struggled to find its rhythm in the second quarter, allowing Kennesaw State to seize control of the game. The Owls capitalized on their opportunities, scoring another touchdown to take a 14-7 lead. Although Liberty managed to tie the game just before halftime at 14-14, the momentum had clearly shifted toward Kennesaw State.
In the second half, Kennesaw State’s defense stepped up, frustrating the Flames’ offensive unit. The Owls struck again when Qua Ashley punched in a 6-yard touchdown to reclaim the lead, 21-14. Liberty responded with a field goal to close the gap to 21-17, but they couldn't sustain any drives to take back the lead. Kennesaw State's defense held firm, forcing Liberty into tough situations and making key stops when needed. Two crucial fourth-quarter field goals by Kennesaw State stretched their lead to 27-17 with just over four minutes to play.
Liberty attempted a late comeback, scoring a touchdown to cut the lead to 27-24, and their defense forced a Kennesaw State three-and-out, giving them one last opportunity to save their perfect season. However, the Flames couldn't capitalize, turning the ball over on downs to seal the game. It was a crushing blow for Liberty, who not only saw their undefeated season come to an end but also lost significant ground in the race for a coveted spot in the 12-team CFP field.
For Kennesaw State, the win was historic, marking their first FBS victory in program history and giving them a huge confidence boost after a tough start to the season. Meanwhile, Liberty’s loss complicates their path to the Conference USA title game and significantly dampens their chances of competing for a spot in the College Football Playoff. Now sitting at 5-1, the Flames will need to refocus quickly and win out if they hope to keep any remaining playoff aspirations alive.
