Nussmeier Shines as No. 18 LSU Cruises to 44-21 Victory Over Nicholls
Garrett Nussmeier threw six touchdown passes to lead LSU to a 44-21 win over Nicholls, bouncing back after their opening loss to USC. LSU (1-1) pulled away in the third quarter, with Nussmeier throwing two quick TDs to Kyren Lacy, who finished with three scores. The junior quarterback’s 302-yard performance tied him with Jayden Daniels for the second-most TD passes in a game in LSU history.
Collin Guggenheim led Nicholls (0-2) with 145 rushing yards and two touchdowns, but LSU’s defense tightened in the second half. Despite the victory, LSU struggled with its run game, managing just 64 yards on 21 carries, which coach Brian Kelly said will require closer evaluation.
LSU will look to fix those issues as they prepare for their SEC opener against South Carolina. The win also marks the 100th anniversary of LSU playing in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by recent renovations to enhance the historic venue.
Takeaways LSU: Despite Nussmeier’s impressive night, LSU’s inability to establish a run game remains a concern.
Nicholls: After two competitive losses, Nicholls has shown resilience, especially with Guggenheim’s standout performances.
