Rutgers took down Virginia Tech 26-23 in a thrilling matchup at Lane Stadium on September 21, 2024. Rutgers outperformed Virginia Tech in total yards (422 to 320), with their balanced attack proving too much for the Hokies. The Scarlet Knights had a two-headed monster in the backfield with Kyle Monangai and Samuel Brown V, both having big games and causing mismatches in the run game. Monangai rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown, while Brown V added 60 yards and two touchdowns. Virginia Tech wasn't lacking in the ground game either, with Bhayshul Tuten rushing for 122 yards and three touchdowns, and quarterback Kyron Drones contributing another 60 rushing yards.
The Scarlet Knights sealed the game with a 24-yard field goal by Jai Patel, leaving just under two minutes on the clock. Virginia Tech had tied the game earlier in the fourth quarter with a two-yard touchdown run by Tuten, followed by a successful two-point conversion. Despite the Hokies' strong 16-point comeback, Rutgers’ defense stood strong in the final moments, securing their road victory with a late interception.
The Hokies will look to bounce back after this tough home loss, but the road ahead won't be easy. They face a challenging matchup against the No. 7 ranked Miami Hurricanes in Miami next week. The game will take place at Hard Rock Stadium on Friday night, September 27th, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
