South Carolina (2-1, 0-1 SEC) returns home this week after a demoralizing loss, while Vanderbilt (3-0, 1-0 SEC) rides high on its best start in years. The Commodores hope to keep the momentum going.

Vanderbilt is off to a 3-0 start, its best opening stretch since 2017. In their latest game, Vandy knocked off No. 11 South Carolina on the road, 31-7. QB Diego Pavia was efficient: 18/25 for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Running game spark came from Jamezell Lassiter, with a long 44-yard rushing touchdown. Defensively, Vandy was dominant: forced four turnovers; held South Carolina to just 86 rushing yards, a season-low for the Gamecocks. Vandy also snapped a 16-game losing streak vs South Carolina and won its first SEC opener since 2011.

South Carolina came in ranked No. 11, riding early expectations but suffered a disappointing defeat at home. QB LaNorris Sellers was knocked out of the game in the second quarter after a helmet-to-helmet hit, and did not return. His absence threw the Gamecocks into disarray. South Carolina’s offense was stalled for long stretches. Penalties, turnovers, and lack of blocks were costly. They struggled to maintain drives after Sellers’ exit.

Vanderbilt is riding high. A big road win over a ranked opponent gives confidence, momentum, and belief. South Carolina, reeling from a loss and injury to its quarterback, needs to reestablish poise quickly. South Carolina may see more action from backup QB Luke Doty, who stepped in for Sellers. How he handles pressure, tight windows, and making plays will be a focal point. Vanderbilt’s defense will test that.

Vanderbilt forced four turnovers in the USC game — a major difference maker. South Carolina’s mistakes hurt them. Limiting mental errors, penalties, and maintaining composure will be crucial for the Gamecocks. Vandy got big splash plays on the ground via Lassiter; those forced the defense to respect both run and pass. If South Carolina can’t generate rushing success, Vandy’s balanced attack may control tempo. Vanderbilt dominated the line of scrimmage and held South Carolina’s run game in check. South Carolina must find ways to generate its running game or at least open up play action to relieve pressure. South Carolina has home crowd, expectations, and likely more pressure. Vanderbilt, flying somewhat under the radar till now, may be freer to play aggressively, take risks, and capitalize on momentum swings.
