We were in Blacksburg as the Hokies played the Terriers at Lane Stadium this past weekend, and they were searching to come out of this game with a winning record, and Wofford was searching for their first win of this season. In the end the Hokies came out on top 27-7 and moved to 2-1. Let’s take a closer look at what happened in this game.
This game started off slow as the first time Virginia Tech touched the ball they turned it over on downs, and on Wofford's first offensive possession they punted in 6 plays. However, the next time the Hokies touched the ball on offense they were able to score the first points of the game with a 46 yard field goal from William Ross. The Wofford offense could not seem to get anything going early in this game, as their second possession was a 3 and out. The first quarter ended in the middle of the Hokies' third time on offense.
To start the second quarter William Ross made a 41 yard field goal to put Virginia Tech up 6-0. Once again on offense the Terriers punted. The next time the Hokies touched the ball they were able to put together an 82 yard touchdown drive where Jalen Holston had 35 rushing yards including a 1 yard rushing touchdown to put the Hokies up 13-0. The Terriers could not get anything going offensively in the first half as they punted for the fourth straight time. Before halftime Virginia Tech was able to march 64 yards in 10 plays to score another touchdown, this time it was Grant Wells who threw an 11 yard pass to Jadan Blue. The first half ended with Virginia Tech up 20-0 over Wofford.
The third quarter consisted of 5 straight punts, 2 by Virginia Tech and 3 by Wofford. Neither team could seem to get into rhythm in the third quarter as the longest drive was only seven plays and 44 yards by Wofford. The third quarter ended with the score remaining at 20-0 in Virginia Tech’s favor.
At the start of the fourth quarter, the Hokies were able to finish off an 8 play 80 yard drive with a 27 yard pass from Grant Wells to Bryce Duke. This made the score 27-0. Wofford was able to score their first points of the game after a 75 yard touchdown drive that was finished off with a Nathan Walker 3 yard run. Virginia Tech’s next two possessions consisted of them trying to make time run out and they were successful in this. The Hokies had bested the Terriers 27-7.
Week 4 Previews for Wofford and Virginia Tech
Next week Wofford takes on an 0-2 Kennesaw State team at Kennesaw State. Both teams will be searching for their first win, so it should be a fun matchup. Wofford’s offense is going to have to step up if they want to win this game, and get their first win of the season.
Next week Virginia Tech will be taking on the 1-2 West Virginia Mountaineers. The Mountaineers have a dangerous passing attack, so it makes sense why they are early favorites in this game. However, do not sleep on Virginia Tech’s balanced offense as it could do some damage against the Mountaineers. This game should be a good matchup and possibly one of the better ones of Week 4.
