College sports are all about culture and tradition. Virginia Tech’s football program has a culture that is highlighted by night games. Enter Sandman by Metalica blasts throughout the stadium, as hundreds of thousand fans jump in unison in the crowd. It is arguably one of the most fascinating traditions in all of college football. Saturday night, the Hokies took on the Monarchs in a late night gridiron matchup.
The 1st quarter of the game was pretty stagnant, offensive wise, with the only points that were scored being a safety for Virginia Tech. The 2nd quarter was much more entertaining, as Grant Wells, starting QB for VT, had two passing touchdowns, while Grant Wilson, starting QB for ODU, had one passing touchdown. Additionally, ODU’s Ethan Sanchez kicked in a 28 yard field goal to make the score 16-10 at half, with VT in the lead. Virginia Tech took total control in the second half, outscoring Old Dominion 20-7. The Hokies finished the game with 259 passing yards, 109 total rushing yards, and five total sacks, compared to the Monarchs finishing with 94 passing yards, 201 rushing yards, and no forced turnovers.
The Hokies will look to build on this momentum on Saturday against a Purdue Boilermakers squad that is coming off of a disappointing loss against Fresno State. The final score of that matchup was 39-35.
